Cub Club

July 5, 2010

It's hard to mention Huddersfield's Cub Club without mentioning Minus The Bear, a band who up until recently were off my radar completely. However while it is true that elements of Cub Club would slot in perfectly on a Minus The Bear album, it isn't fair to dismiss them as a cheap imitation. The Math-rock guitars will definitely not be to everyone's taste, but for me they work. The vocal intro on Rainbow Nosebleed might also serve as a deterrent towards some more casual listeners, but scratch the surface and you'll find a disjointed opener blending effortlessly into melodic gang chants that will appeal to fans of Four Year Strong and Fireworks. But that's as far as the similarities end. All comparisons aside, Cub Club have a sound that, while not immediately accessible, will definitely win over heads and hearts of those willing to give them repeat listens. Those that know Emo didn't start with a naked photo of Pete Wentz will appreciate the sensibility in the vocals who aren't dissimilar to that of Braid. Bands like this come few and far between, and when I do come across them, it makes me question why I'm the one sat behind a keyboard, and not behind a guitar. Cub Club are fun, they're fresh and they need to be heard.

Spiders Eat Vinyl

June 19, 2010

While I try to write reviews fairly and without bias, I still seem to forge an opinion or pigeon-hole the sound of a band based on their influences, before even listening to their songs. With the case of Sheffield based Spiders Eat Vinyl I wasn't able to be so judgemental. Upon browsing their influences I was met with bands I have grown up on (The Rolling Stones, The Doors), bands I have found myself listening to recently (Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead), and bands I had never even heard...

Pennines

June 8, 2010

If I was asked to sum Pennines up in two words it would be near ‘impossible’. If I was asked to sum them up in one word, it would be ‘no’. I want to avoid tarring them with the emo brush that many bands get tarnished with, as it’s a genre that has become a parody of what it originally stood for. That said however, Pennines are Emo. Real Emo. They’re keeping alive sensibilities that many thought were dead, and while bands such as Paramore or Mayday Parade are the bands that ...

The Cougars

June 8, 2010

“Indie” is a word that’s lost it’s meaning over time. Digressing from the once independent labels, or even just individuality it’s become in itself a farce, with bands such as Scouting For Girls clogging up radio airplay and besmirching the connotations with jangly, radio-friendly guitars, and sweet almost nonsensical lyrics. So it’s good to know that there’s still some heart left in a genre, that’s become a parody. When I heard Cambridge based The Cougars it was immedia...

Dinosaur Outfit

June 8, 2010

With the recent surge of middle class indie boys clogging up the majority of people’s Ipods, it’s refreshing to hear something other than a colloquial drone. So when I absent-mindedly stumbled across Bath based Dinosaur Outfit and was assaulted with a tirade of jangly guitars and synth you can imagine the shit-eating grin that spread across my face. Imagine again, the smile when I find out that some of their influences are two of my favourite bands, and you’re probably not even c...

I Said The Spy

June 8, 2010

While the scourge of recent Pop-Punk revival bands has left a bitter taste in the mouths of die-hards, there are those who could be called an exception. I, Said The Spy, are one of those exceptions. The two tracks on their Myspace show they’re something different, a kick in the genres proverbials so to speak.
Party On Wayne has everything, gang chants not dissimilar to that of Four Year Strong, synth, and lyrics that sound familiar even on the first listen.
The classic four piece line...
